On Wednesday, February 12th, 2025, students, award recipients, and program participants gathered in the Bruin Reception Room at Ackerman Union for “Building Connections: A Diversity Dinner.” The evening celebrated community, connection, and inspiration, featuring insightful remarks from keynote speaker Rigoberto Perez Hernandez.
Attendees enjoyed a delicious dinner and engaging welcome activities as they checked in. The official program kicked off at 5:00 PM, followed by a warm welcome by Brain Kite, the Dean and Vice Provost of UCLA Graduate Education, and a keynote address by Dr. Rigoberto Perez Hernandez.
Dr. Rigoberto Perez Hernandez, a first-generation physician, mentor, and UCLA resident, shared his inspiring journey from Watsonville, CA, to Cornell University and UCLA, where he earned his MPH and MD. He spoke passionately about the importance of mentorship, community service, and academic excellence, drawing from his own experiences and emphasizing the power of guidance in shaping future leaders. A lively Q&A session followed his talk, allowing attendees to delve deeper into his insights and ask questions. Rigoberto’s story, emphasizing the power of mentorship and community, served as a powerful reminder that we are stronger together. The connections forged at events like “Building Connections” are vital, particularly given the challenges of graduate studies. The resilience and dedication demonstrated by the students present – award recipients and program participants alike – is truly inspiring. By fostering these connections, we create a supportive network that empowers individuals to thrive and achieve their full potential.
