The American Indian Studies Program offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in American Indian Studies.
Advising
The M.A. degree program in American Indian Studies is supervised by an interdepartmental faculty committee. Upon admission, the committee assigns students a faculty adviser from their major area of concentration and, if appropriate, from their area of specialization. Together, the students and their adviser(s) formulate the program of study for the first year. Students are expected to meet with their academic advisers at the beginning of each quarter for approval of their program of courses, and as often as necessary for review of their progress.
At the beginning of the second year in residence, students are expected to select a guidance committee, which is subject to approval by the Committee to Administer the M.A. in American Indian Studies. The guidance committee, which should be chosen from disciplines within the student’s area of concentration, is responsible for the supervision, review, and the final recommendation for acceptance of the student’s comprehensive examination or thesis as partial fulfillment of the M.A. requirements.
Areas of Study
The American Indian Studies M.A. program is an interdepartmental program with 12 participating schools and departments: Anthropology, Art, Education, English, Ethnomusicology, History, Information Studies, Law, Linguistics, Music, Sociology, and Theater. The disciplines are grouped into four areas of concentration: history and law; expressive arts; social relations; and language, literature, and folklore. Courses related to the American Indian Studies M.A. program are also offered in the following departments: Political Science, Social Welfare, and Psychology.
Foreign Language Requirement
Students must complete one of the following courses: (1) Linguistics 114; (2) Anthropology C243P; or (3) for native speakers of an American Indian language, an independent studies course (taken with consent of the instructor) in either Linguistics or Anthropology, designed and supervised by a consenting faculty member, in which the objective of the course is to impart a structural knowledge of the student’s language. These courses are designed to show how American Indian languages and communicative norms are primary vehicles for understanding American Indian cultures.
Course Requirement
A minimum of 10 courses is required, at least seven of which must be graduate courses. Five courses are required: American Indian Studies M200A, M200B, M200C, and M200D, which must be taken in the first year, and one of the language/linguistics options described above, which must be taken by the end of the second year. In addition, one of the remaining five courses must be American Indian Studies 202 or a graduate methods course in another department taken with the written permission of the chair/director of the program.
Students select one area of concentration: (1) history and law; (2) expressive arts; (3) social relations; or (4) language, literature, and folklore. Students may petition for optional combinations of interdisciplinary work through the committee that administers the program. In addition to the five required courses, students must complete a minimum of four courses in an area of concentration. Three of these must be graduate-level courses. Two additional courses are to be chosen from other areas of concentration. Courses must be chosen from an approved list maintained by the program.
Two courses in the 500 series may be applied toward the 10-course requirement. However, only one 596 course may be applied toward the program requirement of seven graduate courses.

Only 12 units of law courses are allowed to be double-counted toward the MA degree by petition to the Graduate Division.

Comprehensive Examination Plan
A proposed comprehensive examination committee, composed of three faculty members (two from the major area of concentration and one from the minor area), must be submitted to the Graduate Advisory Subcommittee by the end of the fourth quarter of study. The comprehensive examination normally consists of a written examination in the major area of concentration and in the minor area of concentration. The written examination is typically followed by an oral discussion of the student’s answers involving both the student and the committee members. The examination is designed and evaluated by the student’s M.A. committee. Students should work closely with their committee members in preparing for the examination.
Thesis Plan
Every master’s degree thesis plan requires the completion of an approved thesis that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research.
A proposed thesis committee, composed of three faculty members (two from the major area of concentration and one from the minor area), must be submitted to the Graduate Advisory Subcommittee by the end of the fourth quarter of study. Students must also submit a thesis proposal to their master’s committee by the end of the fourth quarter of study. The master’s thesis should demonstrate the student’s ability to define and solve a significant problem in the area of concentration. It should provide evidence of mastery of theory and methodology relevant to the topic, familiarity with literature in the field, competency in research techniques, and ability to make an original contribution to the field. Copies of the thesis must be submitted to each member of the committee by the fifth week of the quarter in which students expect to graduate.
Time-to-Degree
Students are required to be in residence for a minimum of four quarters and should normally complete the program in two years.
Termination of Graduate Study and Appeal of Termination
University Policy
A student who fails to meet the above requirements may be recommended for termination of graduate study. A graduate student may be disqualified from continuing in the graduate program for a variety of reasons. The most common is failure to maintain the minimum cumulative grade point average (3.00) required by the Academic Senate to remain in good standing (some programs require a higher grade point average). Other examples include failure of examinations, lack of timely progress toward the degree and poor performance in core courses. Probationary students (those with cumulative grade point averages below 3.00) are subject to immediate dismissal upon the recommendation of their department. University guidelines governing termination of graduate students, including the appeal procedure, are outlined in Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA.
Special Departmental or Program Policy
The Graduate Advisory Committee reviews a student’s program at the end of spring term and makes recommendations regarding continuance or termination. The interdepartmental committee to administer the program decides on recommendations for termination. A student may appeal a recommendation for termination in writing to this committee.

Foreign Language Requirement
During the first two years of study students are expected to make satisfactory progress toward fulfillment of the first foreign language requirement for the doctoral degree (listed under Doctoral Degree). Students who decide not to pursue the doctoral degree and to leave the graduate program must have completed the first foreign language requirement in order to receive the M.A. degree.
Course Requirements
During the first two years of study toward the doctoral degree, students must complete a total of 12 courses taken for a letter grade in the department, including French and Francophone Studies 200 which should be taken as early as possible. These 12 courses fulfill the course requirements for the master’s degree. Nine of the 12 courses must be at the graduate level. No courses in the 500 series may be applied toward the course requirements for the master’s degree.
Students are required to consult with the graduate adviser to ensure full historical coverage of French literature. More information on course requirements is listed under Doctoral Degree.
Although all students are admitted directly into the doctoral program, those who decide not to pursue the doctoral degree and to leave the graduate program must have completed the 12-course requirement above in order to receive the M.A. degree.

Comprehensive Examination Plan
The comprehensive examination requirement is met through two reviews, assessing academic performance and other evidence of professional promise. The first review, taken in the third quarter, is meant to be advisory in nature. Students are evaluated by the faculty whose courses they have taken and are provided with suggestions through a follow-up departmental written evaluation. The second review is taken in the sixth quarter and is conducted by a departmental review committee. The second review is based on the following four components:
(1) A submission of three papers written for courses taken during the six quarters and their respective evaluations.
(2) An expanded version of one of the three papers provided by the student prior to the review.
(3) A two- to three-page, single-spaced self-statement outlining the student’s progress and direction of future study.
(4) An oral examination.
Following the second review, students are provided with the committee’s written evaluation which may include a recommendation for continuation and suggestions for future work toward the Ph.D. degree. Students who decide not to pursue the doctoral degree and to leave the graduate program must contact the graduate adviser and make arrangements for the M.A. degree as early as possible but no later than the second week of the sixth quarter. Students will receive the M.A. degree if they have passed the sixth quarter review and have satisfactorily completed the course, language, and residency requirements as outlined above.

Advising
The department is concerned that students receive advising that is directed toward their individual needs and interests. Students are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the available guidance and to participate in the department’s intellectual life.
The Director of Graduate Studies is the principal contact person who advises graduate students in the planning of their individual courses of study and in the completion of degree requirements in a timely fashion. At the beginning of each quarter, all graduate students who have not yet formed a doctoral guidance committee (discussed under Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations) are required to consult with the Director before enrolling in courses.
Students who have established a doctoral guidance committee are advised by the chair of their committee. All students are required to meet with their adviser each quarter to have their program of study approved.
Matriculating students first enter the two-year phase of the doctoral program. Following the sixth-quarter review, a faculty review committee decides on whether to recommend students for admission into the second phase of the doctoral program.
Major Fields or Subdisciplines
French and Francophone Literatures.
Foreign Language Requirement
Doctoral candidates are expected to satisfy two language/interdisciplinary requirements relevant to their dissertation research. Methods of fulfillment must be discussed beforehand with the Director of Graduate Studies. The two requirements are outlined as follows:
(1) The first requirement is a foreign language, other than French, in which the student demonstrates an advanced level of proficiency by passing, with a grade of B or better, at least two upper-division or graduate courses offered by another language department. Such courses must require the use of texts in the original language. These two upper-division courses must be taken for a letter grade.
(2) The second requirement may be fulfilled by: (a) taking three courses in an intellectual discipline pertinent to the dissertation project, of which at least two must be graduate courses in another department and one may be an upper division course (these two courses do not necessarily have to be taken within one department or program); (b) demonstrating a reading knowledge of an additional foreign language by passing language courses (through level 3) or graduate reading courses (courses designated 2G) that are offered by some departments.
Students must complete the language/interdisciplinary requirements before nominating a doctoral committee and taking the qualifying examinations.
Course Requirements
Coursework required for the first two years of doctoral study is listed under Master’s Degree. For the third and fourth years of study, students are expected to complete the following course requirements: a minimum of three graduate courses in the department taken for a letter grade; additional courses in the department if recommended by the adviser; and two or more graduate courses outside of the department as recommended by the adviser (these courses may be used to fulfill the language/interdisciplinary requirement).
Teaching Experience
Although teaching experience is not required, the department provides all graduate students with the opportunity to teach language courses. All teaching assistants are required to complete French and Francophone Studies 495.
Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations
Academic Senate regulations require all doctoral students to complete and pass University written and oral qualifying examinations prior to doctoral advancement to candidacy. Also, under Senate regulations the University oral qualifying examination is open only to the student and appointed members of the doctoral committee. In addition to University requirements, some graduate programs have other pre-candidacy examination requirements. What follows in this section is how students are required to fulfill all of these requirements for this doctoral program.
Students select a doctoral guidance committee no later than the eighth quarter of study. The guidance committee is composed of a chair, generally in the proposed period of specialization, and at least one other faculty member in the department. The committee directs the student up to the doctoral qualifying examinations. Once established, the doctoral guidance committee holds a meeting during which the student proposes a general topic for the dissertation. The student follows the guidance committee’s suggestions for possible additional coursework.
Doctoral qualifying examinations take place in two stages:
Stage 1: By the ninth quarters of study, students must consult with their doctoral guidance committee on the preparation of the written qualifying examination, which takes place in the 11th quarter of study. The written qualifying examination consists of two parts. The first part covers the literary history related to the proposed dissertation topic. The second part consists of critical theory relevant to the proposed dissertation topic. Each examination is based on an individual reading list of approximately 15 works, established by the examiner and the candidate. These two four-hour examinations are to be taken within one week and are administered by the guidance committee. A student may attempt one or both parts of this examination a maximum of two times.
Stage 2: The University Oral Qualifying Examination, which takes place in the quarter following the written examination or in the 12th quarter of study, may be taken only after completion of course and language requirements, successful passing of the written examinations, and submission of a dissertation proposal. Prior to this examination, two more members are added to the guidance committee, one from the department, and one from another department. This nominated committee is then submitted to the Graduate Division for formal appointment and becomes the doctoral committee that administers the examination.
Prior to taking the University Oral Qualifying Examination, students submit a dissertation prospectus to every member of the doctoral committee. The prospectus is a descriptive text of approximately 20-30 pages outlining the nature, scope, and significance of the proposed dissertation topic, plus a bibliography. For the preparation of the prospectus, students work in close consultation with the doctoral committee chair. Students are responsible for submitting the prospectus to the committee members within a time frame that is satisfactory to the committee for administering the examination. This two-hour oral examination includes a review and discussion of the dissertation prospectus.
Advancement to Candidacy
Students are advanced to candidacy and awarded the Candidate in Philosophy (C.Phil.) degree upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations.
Doctoral Dissertation
Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.
Final Oral Examination (Defense of Dissertation)
Not required for all students in the program. The decision as to whether a defense is required is made by the doctoral committee.

The Department of African American Studies offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in African American Studies.
Advising
The M.A. program is supervised by an interdepartmental faculty committee. Upon admission, students are assigned a faculty adviser, who assists them with the formulation of their program of study for the first year. Students are expected to meet at least quarterly with their academic adviser, usually at the beginning of the quarter to have their enrollment plan approved. At the beginning of the second year in residence, students are expected to nominate a three-person guidance committee which is subject to approval by the interdepartmental committee. The guidance committee, which is usually chaired by the student’s academic adviser, is responsible for supervision, review, and the final recommendation for acceptance of the thesis as partial fulfillment of the M.A. requirements. Students may, however, elect to complete the M.A. degree through the comprehensive examination plan.

The M.A. in African American Studies is interdepartmental, with formal linkages to other disciplinary departments: Anthropology, English, History, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Foreign Language Requirement
Students are required to satisfy the language requirement in one of the following ways: (1) documenting satisfactory completion of two full years of coursework in a foreign language at the undergraduate level, or (2) by successfully passing one UCLA foreign language course (one quarter) with a grade of “C” or better; or (3) by participating in a study abroad program, (4) other pre-approved course or equivalent that provides some exposure to language learning or (5) fulfill the language requirement via the alternate Research Methodology Requirement. Take one course from the African American studies approved Research Methods Courses. Students in the M.A. program prior to 2012, but who have yet to complete the degree, may be allowed to complete the program under this language requirement.
Course Requirements
A total of 12 courses are required for the degree. Of that number, only four may be selected from upper division listings; the remaining courses must be selected from graduate listings. The program has a structured core of six required African American Studies courses. Students are required to take one graduate-level course in research methods (for social sciences students) or in critical theory (for humanities students). The methods courses should be selected from the list approved by the interdepartmental degree committee (students may petition to substitute appropriate upper division courses if their outside department’s methods courses are closed to non-majors. At least nine of the twelve required courses should be taken in the first year of study. The second year is devoted to acquiring disciplinary competence in the student’s cognate field, and up to six courses must be selected from that discipline. Eight units of 500-series courses may be applied to either the total course requirement or the minimum graduate course requirement.
African American Studies, M.A./Law, J.D.
For this curriculum, 12 courses are required for the degree, of which eight must be at the graduate level. Only 12 units of Law courses are allowed to be double-counted toward the M.A. degree by petition to the Graduate Division.

Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering offers the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Chemical Engineering.
Advising
Each department in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has a faculty graduate adviser. Students who specialize in semiconductor manufacturing are assigned to the faculty graduate adviser for semiconductor manufacturing. A current list of graduate advisers can be obtained from the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, 6426 Boelter Hall, Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Students are assigned a faculty research adviser upon admission to the School. Advisers may be changed upon written request from the student. All HSSEAS faculty serve as advisers. During the first quarter in residence, students meet with all faculty members in the department, and choose three professors with whom they would like to conduct master’s thesis research. These choices are submitted to the graduate adviser. The faculty meets separately and assigns each student their faculty research adviser, taking into account the student’s choices and the interests of the department as a whole. The department will consider changing an adviser upon written request from the student.
Provisionally admitted students meet with the graduate adviser upon matriculation to plan a course of study to remove any deficiencies.
During the second quarter in residence, students should arrange an appointment as early as possible with their faculty research adviser to plan the proposed program of study towards the M.S. degree. Continuing students are required to confer with their research adviser during the time of enrollment each quarter so that progress can be assessed and the study list approved.
During the first quarter in residence, students who specialize in semiconductor manufacturing should arrange for an appointment with the research adviser for this specialization, and obtain an approved plan of study for the semiconductor specialization. The program of study may be changed only with the approval of the adviser.
Based on the quarterly transcripts, student records are reviewed at the end of each quarter by the departmental graduate adviser and Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs. Special attention is given if students were admitted provisionally or are on probation. If their progress is unsatisfactory, students are informed of this in writing by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
Students who receive teaching or research assistantships must receive approval from their research adviser or the departmental graduate adviser to add or drop courses.
Students are strongly urged to consult with the departmental Student Affairs Officer and/or the Office of Academic and Student Affairs regarding procedures, requirements, and the implementation of policies. In particular, advice should be sought on advancement to candidacy for the M.S. degree, and on the use of the Filing Fee.
Areas of Study
Specialization in semiconductor manufacturing. The specialization requires that the student have advanced knowledge of processing semiconductor devices on the nanoscale. This knowledge is assessed in a comprehensive examination.
Foreign Language Requirement
None.
Course Requirements
The requirements for the M.S. degree are nine courses (36 units) and a minimum 3.0 grade-point average in the graduate courses. Chemical Engineering 200, 210, and 220 are required. Two other courses must be taken from regular offerings of the department, and two additional courses may be Chemical Engineering 598, involving work on the thesis. The remaining two of the nine courses may be taken from those offered by the department, or from any other field in life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering. At least 24 units must be in letter-graded 200-level courses.
All master’s degree candidates are required to enroll in Chemical Engineering 299 during each quarter of residence.
Specialization in semiconductor manufacturing. Students in this specialization are required to complete 10 courses (44 units) with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average overall and in graduate courses. A minimum of five (20 units) 200-series courses are required including 270 and 270R. Students are also required to take Chemical Engineering 104C and 104CL; Electrical Engineering 123A; and Materials Science and Engineering 121. In addition, students must select two courses from the department’s list of electives as well as two courses from elective offerings in the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering; a minimum of two of these elective courses must be in the 200 series. Approved elective courses include: Chemical Engineering C219, C214, C218, 223, C240; Electrical Engineering 124, 221A, 221B, 223, 224; Materials Science and Engineering 210 and 223.
Students in the specialization of semiconductor manufacturing who have been undergraduates or graduates at UCLA and who have already taken some of the required courses may substitute electives for these courses. However, no courses taken while not enrolled in the semiconductor manufacturing specialization may be counted toward the 10-course requirement for the degree. A program of study encompassing the course requirements must be submitted to the research adviser for approval before the end of the student’s first quarter in residence.
A program of study which encompasses these requirements must be submitted to the departmental Student Affairs Office for approval before the end of the student’s second quarter of residence.
Undergraduate Courses. No lower division courses may be applied toward graduate degrees. Field Experience
Specialization in semiconductor manufacturing. Students are required to take Chemical Engineering 270R, a directed research course, in the field, working at an industrial semiconductor fabrication facility. The proposed research must be approved by the graduate adviser for semiconductor manufacturing and the industrial sponsor of the research.
Comprehensive Examination Plan
This plan is only for students in the specialization in semiconductor manufacturing. Students take Chemical Engineering 597A to prepare for a comprehensive written examination. The examination tests for knowledge of the engineering principles of semiconductor manufacturing. In case of failure, the examination may be repeated once within one quarter with the consent of the graduate adviser for the specialization. Second failure of the examination leads to a recommendation to the Graduate Division for termination of graduate study.
Thesis Plan
Every master’s degree thesis plan requires the completion of an approved thesis that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research.
This plan is for all M.S. degree students who are not in the specialization in semiconductor manufacturing. These students must complete a thesis. Students should consult the research adviser for details on the thesis plan. Thesis-plan students nominate a three-member thesis committee that must meet University regulations and be approved by the Graduate Division, as outlined in Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA.
Time-to-Degree
The average length of time for students in the M.S. program is six quarters. The maximum time allowed for completing the M.S. degree is three years from the time of admission to the M.S. program in the School.
Specialization in semiconductor manufacturing. Students in this specialization must complete the degree in two years (six quarters). The program may be completed in one calendar year (three quarters and a summer session) by enrolling in three courses per quarter and for one summer session. Students who are enrolled less than full-time must complete the degree in three years (nine quarters).

Students are assigned a faculty research adviser upon admission to the School. The department will consider changing an adviser upon written request from the student in consultation with the faculty graduate adviser.
Provisionally admitted students meet with the faculty graduate adviser upon matriculation to plan a course of study to remedy any deficiencies.
During the second quarter in residence, students should arrange an appointment as early as possible with their faculty research adviser to plan the proposed program of study toward the Ph.D. degree. Continuing students are required to confer with their research adviser during the time of enrollment each quarter so that progress can be assessed and the study list approved.
Based on the quarterly transcripts, student records are reviewed at the end of each quarter by the departmental faculty graduate adviser and Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Special attention is given if students were admitted provisionally, or are on probation. If their progress is unsatisfactory, students are informed of this in writing by the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.
Students who receive teaching or research assistantships must receive approval from their research adviser or the departmental faculty graduate adviser to add or drop courses.
Students are strongly urged to consult with the Student Affairs Officer and/or the Office of Academic and Student Affairs regarding procedures, requirements, and implementation of the policies. In particular, advice should be sought on advancement to candidacy, on the procedures for taking Ph.D. examinations, and on the use of the Filing Fee.

Course Requirements
All Ph.D students are required to take six courses (24 units). All of these units must be letter-graded 200-level courses. Students can choose three out of five core Chemical Engineering courses which are 200, 210, 220, 245 and a graduate Engineering Mathematics course. Two additional courses must be taken from those offered by the department. The final course can be selected from offerings in life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Students are encouraged to take more courses in their field of specialization. These minor field courses should be selected in consultation with their research adviser. A minimum 3.33 grade-point average in graduate courses is required. A program of study to fulfill the course requirements must be submitted for approval to the departmental Student Affairs Office no later than one quarter after successful completion of the preliminary oral examination.
All Ph.D. students are required to enroll in Chemical Engineering 299 during each quarter of residence.

Teaching Experience
At least three quarters of teaching experience are highly recommended. During the quarters when they serve as teaching assistants, students are required to enroll in Chemical Engineering 375. Chemical Engineering 495A and 495B are highly recommended for all new teaching assistants.
Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations
Academic Senate regulations require all doctoral students to complete and pass University written and oral qualifying examinations prior to doctoral advancement to candidacy. Also, under Senate regulations the University oral qualifying examination is open only to the student and appointed members of the doctoral committee. In addition to University requirements, some graduate programs have other pre-candidacy examination requirements. What follows in this section is how students are required to fulfill all of these requirements for this doctoral program.
Students are required to pass the Preliminary Written Examination (PWE) to demonstrate their proficiency in at least Three of the Five Core Areas selected as the following:
Transport Phenomena – (Mandatory for all students)
Students must choose Thermodynamics or Reaction Engineering or Both.
If only one of the above is chosen, then students must choose either Biomolecular Engineering or Engineering Mathematics.
The PWE will be offered at the end of the Winter quarter of each academic year and graded by a faculty committee. Students must take the PWE in their first year. If a student fails the PWE in the first attempt, they can retake it for the second time during the following Spring quarter. Students that fail both PWE attempts will not be allowed to continue in the program.
After completion of the required courses for the degree and passing the PWE, each student must pass the written and oral qualifying examinations. These examinations focus on the student’s dissertation research and are conducted by a doctoral committee consisting of at least four faculty members nominated by the department in accordance with university regulations. Three members, including the chair, are inside members and must hold faculty appointments in the department. The outside member must be a UCLA faculty member in another department. Students are required to have a minimum 3.33 grade-point average in graduate coursework to be eligible to take these examinations.
The written qualifying examination consists of a dissertation research proposal that provides a clear description of the problem(s) considered, a literature review of the current state of the art, and a detailed explanation of the research plan that will be followed to solve the problem(s). The student normally submits the dissertation research proposal to the doctoral committee before the end of the winter quarter of the student’s second year of academic residence.
The University Oral Qualifying examination consists of an oral defense of the dissertation research proposal, and is also administered by the doctoral committee. The written research proposal must be submitted to the committee at least two weeks prior to the oral examination to allow the members sufficient time to evaluate the work.
Advancement to Candidacy
Students are advanced to candidacy upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations.
Doctoral Dissertation
Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.
Final Oral Examination (Defense of Dissertation)
Required for all students in the program.
Time-to-Degree
From admission to graduate status (including work for the master’s degree) to award of the Ph.D. degree: 18 quarters (normative time to degree). Doctoral students are expected to advance to candidacy by the Spring Quarter of their second year in residence. All Ph.D. candidates are required to present a departmental oral seminar to the department; this seminar is normally scheduled in their fourth year of academic residence. With input from their research adviser, students may petition to postpone this seminar. After the departmental seminar, students should complete their dissertation research within the next one to two years.
Termination of Graduate Study and Appeal of Termination
University Policy
A student who fails to meet the above requirements may be recommended for termination of graduate study. A graduate student may be disqualified from continuing in the graduate program for a variety of reasons. The most common is failure to maintain the minimum cumulative grade point average (3.00) required by the Academic Senate to remain in good standing (some programs require a higher grade point average). Other examples include failure of examinations, lack of timely progress toward the degree and poor performance in core courses. Probationary students (those with cumulative grade point averages below 3.00) are subject to immediate dismissal upon the recommendation of their department. University guidelines governing termination of graduate students, including the appeal procedure, are outlined in Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA.
Special Departmental or Program Policy
A recommendation for termination is reviewed by the school’s Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.
Master’s
In addition to the standard reasons noted above, a student may be recommended for termination for
(1) Failure to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 in all courses and in those in the 200 series.
(2) Failure to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 in any two consecutive terms.
(3) Failure to complete the thesis to the satisfaction of the committee members.
(4) Failure to maintain satisfactory progress toward the degree within the three-year time limit for completing all degree requirements.
Doctoral
In addition to the standard reasons noted above, a student may be recommended for termination for
(1) Failure to maintain a grade point average of 3.3 in graduate courses and in any two consecutive quarters.
(2) Failure of the preliminary written examination.
(3) Failure of the written and oral qualifying examination.
(4) Failure of a required final oral examination (defense of the dissertation).
(5) Failure to obtain permission to repeat an examination from an examining committee.
(6) Failure to maintain satisfactory progress toward the degree within the specified time limits.

Interdepartmental Program
College of Letters and Science
The Archaeology Program offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Archaeology.
Advising
Each student should choose a chair for their M.A. research, determined by mutual agreement. The Archaeology Program chair serves as a general graduate advisor. In addition to the M.A. advisor, the student should choose two additional core faculty to form a three-person M.A. committee. The M.A. committee consists of a minimum of three UCLA faculty members who must hold one of the following academic ranks, Professor (i.e., faculty who are members of the Academic Senate, including Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor), Professor Emeritus and Acting Professor. Acting Assistant Professors may serve as regular members, but not as chairs.
Areas of Study
Areas of study include analysis of archaeological materials; ancient Near East; Egypt; Islamic world; China and the Far East; Bronze Age in the Mediterranean; classical Greece and Rome; India and Central Asia; Andean South America; Mesoamerica; Pacific; paleoenvironmental studies; Western North America. Other areas of specialization are also available.
Foreign Language Requirement
The ability to read at least one modern foreign language, relevant to the student’s field of interest, is required for the M.A. There are three options available to satisfy the language requirement. This requirement may be met by (1) completing three courses in an introductory sequence of the selected language at UCLA with a minimum grade of A- in each course; (2) take an examination (in Spanish, Italian, French, or German; other languages, if deemed necessary by the committee, may be substituted) administered by the Archaeology Program; or (3) Petition – A student who has completed a course of study in a foreign language may petition to satisfy the language requirement. International students whose native language is not English may petition to use English to fulfill their M.A. level language requirement. The foreign language requirement must be completed by the end of the fourth quarter or the beginning of the fifth quarter in the Program, unless an earlier deadline is imposed by the student.
Course Requirements
Incoming students are required to complete a three-quarter core course sequence that consists of Archaeology M201A (4 units), Archaeology M201B (4 units), and Archaeology M201C (4 units). The master’s program requires a minimum of 42 total units taken for a letter grade and distributed among at least nine courses.(the three core courses listed above count toward this 42-unit total). Six of the nine courses must be taken in the form of 4 or 6 unit classes. At least two of these additional 4-6 unit courses (beyond the three core courses) must be graduate-level courses. The remaining four of the nine courses may be upper division undergraduate or graduate level courses (taken with the approval of the Instructor of the course). Students should keep in mind that independent studies and other courses taken for a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory(S/U) grade cannot be applied to the 42 unit requirement. Students must take two M205 (or commensurate course[s] approved by the Chair), laboratory based courses such as paleoethnobotany, ceramic analysis, zooarchaeology, GIS, or lithic analysis, among others. One course must be well outside the student’s sphere of geographic interest, selected from a pool of eligible courses in consultation with the student’s faculty advisor and the Archaeology Program Chair; this course may be upper-division or graduate level, and must be taken for a letter grade.
Teaching Experience
Not required. The Program assists students in obtaining teaching experience through appointments as teaching assistants in a number of other departments.
Field Experience
No graduate degree is awarded until the student has worked in the field and has demonstrated her/his competency to direct field research in archaeology. Both theoretical and practical knowledge of methods and techniques used in field archaeology are necessary. This requirement may be met in several ways: ordinarily the student will take a regular UCLA field course such as Anthropology 115P, Archaeology 259, Ancient Near East 261, Classics C251E, or similar courses offered by other departments. Comparable courses offered by other institutions may also be accepted.
Except for the courses listed above, any given formula to fulfill the requirement must be cleared in advance with the chair of the program.
Comprehensive Examination Plan
The comprehensive examination consists of three examinations, given at the completion of each section of Archaeology M201A, M201B, and M201C respectively, and a research paper. The comprehensive examinations are graded by three readers (the professor in charge of the course, program chair, and a third faculty member) as high pass, pass, or no pass. Each of the three examinations may be retaken once. The research paper, to be completed by the seventh quarter of residence, is read by three faculty members and assists students and faculty in the determination of whether a student may continue for the Ph.D. degree.

There is a limit of six quarters for the completion of the M.A. degree.
Advising
Each student chooses a chair for his/her Ph.D. research, determined by mutual agreement. The Ph.D. committee must be constituted before the end of the first year of doctoral work. The signatures of the members of the Ph.D. committee, indicating their willingness to serve, must be filed with the Archaeology Program. Admission to the doctoral program for students completing a UCLA M.A. in Archaeology is based on the recommendation by all three members of the M.A. committee; submission by the student of a plan of study, including projected coursework, choice of foreign language, description of qualifying examination components, and dissertation topics; quality of work undertaken in the Archaeology Program, (i.e., a High Pass in the M.A. paper, satisfactory evaluation of the core examinations, and judgment of suitability for original research at the Ph.D. level); and quality of the M.A. core examination results and the M.A. paper.

When proficiency in two foreign languages is not mandated by a student’s interest, a petition outlining the justification for waiving the second language requirement may be prepared. This petition shall include a proposed program of course work or research in a field not directly part of dissertation that is equivalent to the preparation for the foreign language exam .
Course Requirements
For the Ph.D., the student is required to have taken two laboratory courses (this may include the course[s] taken by the student at the M.A. stage). Students are also highly encouraged to take additional courses in archaeological theory to build upon the expertise gained in the core courses.

Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations

The expectation is that by the end of the third quarter of the doctoral program, after the foreign language requirement has been fulfilled, students take a written qualifying examination in the following three areas: (1) topical specialization; (2) analytical theory, method, and technique; and (3) regional culture history. Before the written examinations, the candidate will be required to submit to the doctoral committee a formal dissertation proposal of approximately 7500 words (excluding bibliography and figures) indicating the research problem, geographic area, method of study, and preparation for the dissertation. If the written qualifying examination is passed, students may then make arrangements to take the oral examination.
The University Oral Qualifying Examination must be taken by the end of the third quarter of the doctoral program. The Ph.D. oral proposal defense must take place within 2-4 weeks of the completion of the written examinations.
If the written examination or any portion thereof is failed, students may make one further attempt if their committee deems it appropriate. The written and oral qualifying examinations must be taken and passed no later than the sixth quarter in the doctoral program.
Advancement to Candidacy
Students are advanced to candidacy and awarded the Candidate in Philosophy (C.Phil.) degree upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations.
Doctoral Dissertation
Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.
Final Oral Examination (Defense of Dissertation)
Not required for all students in the program. The decision as to whether a defense is required is made by the doctoral committee.
Time-to-Degree
There is a ceiling of five academic years for the completion of the dissertation after advancement to candidacy, although the expectation is for the student to complete the dissertation as expeditiously as possible. The dissertation must be filed with the Graduate Division. At the same time, an additional copy of the dissertation is to be filed with the Chairperson of the Archaeology Program.

A student may appeal a recommendation for termination through a request for a hearing before the Executive Committee.

College of Letters and Science
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Spanish, the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Portuguese, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Hispanic Languages and Literatures.
Spanish
Advising
New and continuing students in the M.A. program are advised by the Director of Graduate Studies. During this preliminary (M.A.) stage of the graduate program, the student’s choice of concentration is provisional. The Director of Graduate Studies is responsible for planning, in consultation with the student, a study program and for a periodic review of the student’s progress.
Areas of Study
The department offers two areas of concentration for the M.A. degree in Spanish: A) literature; B) linguistics.
Foreign Language Requirement
All candidates for the M.A. degree in Spanish are required to study a language other than English or Spanish. The requirement may be fulfilled by 1) passing a University reading examination in the language; or 2) passing a University course of at least level 3.
Course Requirements
Eleven courses, nine of which must be graduate level, are required for the M.A. degree. Spanish 495 may count as one of the eleven courses but may not replace one of the graduate courses. One course may be taken in another department with the approval of the graduate adviser. Spanish 596 may be taken only once; courses 597 and 598 do not count toward the degree.
Students choose a concentration from the following options: (A) literature; (B) linguistics.
Option A Literature: Students who choose the literature concentration are required to take Spanish M201A and at least one course in each of the following areas: (1) medieval Spanish literature; (2) Golden Age Spanish literature; (3) 18th and 19th century Spanish literature; (4) 20th century Spanish literature; (5) Colonial or 19th century Spanish American literature; (6) 20th century Spanish American literature; (7) Chicano literature; (8) 20th century Latin American literature, including Brazilian. The remaining courses may be taken in any area offered by the department. Courses are selected in consultation with the graduate adviser, who considers the student’s interests as well as the necessary preparation for the comprehensive examination.
Option B Linguistics: Students who choose the linguistics concentration are required to take one upper division or graduate course in literature offered by the department and ten elective courses to be selected in consultation with the graduate adviser, who considers the student’s interests as well as the necessary preparation for the comprehensive examination.

Comprehensive Examination Plan
(A) Literature: The comprehensive examination in literature consists of a four-hour examination in peninsular Spanish literature and a four-hour examination in Latin American literature. The examination is based on a reading list provided by the department when the student enters the program.
(B) Linguistics: The comprehensive examination in Spanish linguistics consists of four two-hour examinations. Students choose four examination areas from the following: (1) Spanish syntax; (2) Portuguese syntax; (3) Spanish phonetics and morphology; (4) Spanish diachronic and synchronic language variation; (5) Spanish/Spanish-American literature; (6) Luso-Brazilian literature. The examination is based on reading lists for the individual examination areas chosen by the student. Reading lists are provided by departmental faculty members when the examination areas are chosen.
The M.A. program in Spanish is the first phase of the doctoral program in Hispanic Languages and Literatures. When the student has completed all requirements for the M.A. degree, the examination committee will meet to evaluate the student by considering the following: (1) one writing sample in Spanish; (2) results of the comprehensive examination; (3) coursework.
A recommendation is made by the committee at a general department meeting. The department decides whether: a) the student has earned a terminal M.A. degree (that is, the student may not proceed to the doctoral program); b) the student has earned the M.A. degree and may proceed to the second phase of the Ph.D. program.
The comprehensive examinations in literature and linguistics are administered only in Spring Quarter.
Students holding an M.A. degree in a subject area other than Spanish must take the comprehensive examination and present a writing sample to their committee. Students may petition for up to eight graduate courses used for the master’s degree to count toward the Ph.D. degree.
Thesis Plan
Every master’s degree thesis plan requires the completion of an approved thesis that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research.
In lieu of taking the comprehensive examination, students in either concentration may seek permission to present a thesis for the M.A. degree. Students must first complete five graduate courses, one of which must be a seminar. In order to endorse the petition, the graduate adviser and the guidance committee need to find evidence of exceptional ability and promise in term papers and coursework.
Time-to-Degree
Full-time students (three courses per quarter) with no deficiencies upon entrance should complete the coursework and the comprehensive examination within four quarters of admission. Teaching assistants and students with deficiencies at entrance require longer. Students who are not appointed as teaching assistants are expected to complete seven courses for each three-quarter period; students appointed as teaching assistants are expected to complete five courses for each three-quarter period.

Institute of the Environment and Sustainability
The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability offers the Doctor of Environmental Science and Engineering (D.Env.) degree.

Advising
Students are advised in general terms by the program graduate adviser, but a specific program is planned in consultation with each student’s individual faculty adviser. Students should meet with those individuals several times a year to plan their programs. Ongoing evaluations of academic progress are made at the end of each quarter in courses completed toward degree requirements, grades in all coursework, performance in the examination sequence, and performance in the Problems Courses. The primary assessment is by program faculty with review and assistance as needed by the student’s adviser and the Environmental Science and Engineering Faculty Advisory Committee.
Major Fields or Subdisciplines
Specialties within the program include (but are not limited to) the assessment and management of hazardous substances in the air, soil, and water environments; migration of contaminants in surface and groundwater; health risks of toxic substances; mitigation of adverse effects on the biological environment; restoration ecology; and environmental economics. Also, students may balance their work with a greater emphasis on either the science/engineering or science/policy side of their specialty.

Course Requirements
Course requirements consist of core courses, elective courses, environmental science and engineering seminars, a technical writing course and problems courses.
Core Courses. Eleven core course requirements must be satisfied. All core courses must be taken on a letter grading basis (not for S/U grading). Courses must be taken from the following categories:
Environmental Science (four courses). Courses that describe the characteristics of terrestrial, air, and water environments; the biota; the geological, biological, chemical, hydrological, and atmospheric processes of the environment; and the interrelationships between these compartments. Required courses are as follows: Environmental Health Sciences 212, 225, 240, 264.
Environmental Engineering (three courses). Courses in engineering, mathematics, and the applied physical and life sciences covering topics such as modeling of environmental systems, fate and effects of environmental contaminants, design and evaluation of pollution control systems, plus courses that describe the tools and methods needed to address environmental problems, such as field and laboratory analytical methods, statistics, computer science, and advanced applied mathematics. Required courses are as follows: Civil and Environmental Engineering 153, 155 and one elective engineering course to be approved by the program faculty.
Environmental Management, Law, and Policy (two courses). Courses that relate to the social and institutional factors relevant to environmental problem solving such as the development and implementation of regulations, dynamics of public participation, and socioeconomic analysis of current and historical trends in environmental and energy policy. Required courses are as follows: Environment C234, Urban Planning M264A/B (same as Law 290).
Analytical Tools and Methods (two courses). Courses that introduce students to the tools and methods required for interdisciplinary research such as probability and statistics, decision analysis, geographical information systems (GIS), numerical analysis and experiment and survey design. Two courses approved by the program faculty. Suggested courses are: Biostats 100A/B, 110A, CEE 103, 110, EEB C219, ENV 297A, Geog 299A/B/C/D/E/F, Management 217A, Public Policy 203, Stats 100A/B, 101A, Urban Planning M206A/B.
Elective Courses. Four courses selected to provide depth in one area for students whose previous degrees emphasized disciplinary breadth or to provide additional courses in an area related to a student’s goals within environmental science and engineering. Elective courses will be selected in consultation with the student’s academic advisor and must be approved by the program faculty. All elective courses must be taken on a letter-grading basis (not for S/U grading).
Credit for Prior Work. Entering environmental science and engineering students may already have completed some of the required coursework in their undergraduate and graduate work. Three of the 11 core courses can be waived based on prior coursework. Any other course requirement satisfied by previous work must be replaced with an elective in any field of environmental science and engineering that is pertinent to the goals of the student. Thus, a minimum of 12 core and elective courses must be completed after admission to the program. A minimum of 10 core and elective courses must be taken at UCLA or another University of California campus.
Environmental Science and Engineering Seminar. While completing core and elective requirements, full-time students must attend the equivalent of two quarters of weekly seminars in the general area of environmental science and engineering, either by enrolling in a seminar course or attending 16 separate departmental seminars each year.
Effective Technical Writing Course. All students must enroll in Environment M412 during the first or second year.
Problems Courses. Problems courses constitute intensive multidisciplinary applied research directed toward the solution of current environmental problems. Students are required to quantify and measure necessary parameters, perform critical evaluations, edit and process technical and socioeconomic information, meet deadlines, and communicate through a final report to the competent lay person as well as to the technical specialist. Sometimes two or three faculty from different academic disciplines oversee a team of student researchers. Before proceeding to the problems courses, students must have completed eight of the required core courses, successfully passed all core and elective courses taken (B- grade or better), and maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 for all classes taken after entering the Environmental Science and Engineering Program. Twenty-four quarter units of Environment 400 must be completed during the three quarters prior to advancement to candidacy. The requirement may be met by completing three consecutive quarters (eight units per quarter) on a single theme; or as a minimum, at least two consecutive quarters devoted to a single theme plus one quarter participation or activity approved by the faculty. Enrollment in more than one problems course per quarter is not allowed. No more than eight units of other coursework may be taken when enrolled in a problems course.
Problems Course Workshops. All students must enroll in Environment M410 A-C before advancing to candidacy.
Normally, problems course credit is only earned from courses offered through the Environmental Science and Engineering Program. However, students may petition the faculty for permission to earn problems course credit through multidisciplinary environmental projects offered in other departments at UCLA.

Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations
Academic Senate regulations require all doctoral students to complete and pass University written and oral qualifying examinations prior to doctoral advancement to candidacy. Also, under Senate regulations the University oral qualifying examination is open only to the student and appointed members of the doctoral committee. In addition to University requirements, some graduate programs have other pre-candidacy examination requirements. What follows in this section is how students are required to fulfill all of these requirements for this doctoral program.
A two-tiered examination sequence, consisting of written and oral examinations, is required for advancement to candidacy to the D.Env. degree. The examinations must be successfully completed before the internship can begin. The purpose of the examinations is to test the student’s understanding of the core and breadth areas, the master’s field, current issues in the environmental field, and subjects covered in students’ problems course experience. The written examination is administered by the program faculty. The written examination may be repeated once. The University Oral Qualifying Examination is administered by the doctoral committee, a four-person faculty committee that guides the student through the remainder of the program. Generally, the doctoral committee is appointed during the second year of the student’s tenure at UCLA. The oral examination may be repeated once.
Internship. After advancement to candidacy (see below), students begin an internship in their field of interest at an outside institution. Arrangements for the internship are the students’ responsibility but program faculty will assist. The institution and the nature of the appointment must be approved by the doctoral committee and the Chair of the Environmental Science and Engineering Faculty Advisory Committee. Supervision during the field training experience will be by the doctoral committee and the field program supervisor. A letter of agreement between UCLA and the institution is required. During each long session quarter of internship the student must register at UCLA for eight units of Environment 599.
No later than nine months after advancement to candidacy, at the beginning of the internship, the candidate is required to present a written prospectus of the dissertation and defend it before the doctoral committee.
Advancement to Candidacy
Students are advanced to candidacy upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations.
Doctoral Dissertation
Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.
Final Oral Examination (Defense of the Dissertation)
Required for all students in the program.
Time-to-Degree
Well-prepared students who hold strong baccalaureate and master’s degrees should be able to complete the requirements for the D.Env. degree in 13 to 15 quarters, including the internship period.

A recommendation for termination for student who is not advanced to candidacy is made by the program faculty. A student may appeal a recommendation for termination to the Environmental Science and Engineering Faculty Advisory Committee. In addition to the standard reasons outlined above, a student may be recommended for termination based on the inability to communicate (in writing or orally) as required for success in the program area.

School of the Arts and Architecture
The Department of Art offers the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in Art.
Advising
For general advising students contact the graduate assistant. A faculty adviser is appointed for new students. Continuing graduate reviews, with the full faculty in attendance, are held twice yearly.
Areas of Study
Painting and drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, new genres, and interdisciplinary studio. There are no limits to the variations, extent, or value of these designations.

Course Requirements
A minimum of 72 units in the department in upper-division and graduate level courses is required, with a B average or better. Within those 72 units, a minimum of 40 quarter units in the 200 series must be taken, including at least four units (one course) per academic year of Art 276 until completion of the degree, a minimum of 24 quarter units in the field of specialization, and eight units of Art C280.
A minimum total of 12 quarter units of art history and an additional 28 quarter units of art history or history, theory and criticism coursework offered by related departments such as Architecture and Urban Design, Comparative Literature, Design|Media Arts, Film, Television, and Digital Media, and World Arts and Cultures in undergraduate or graduate study are also required (including Art C280). Studio-based courses cannot count as substitutions for this requirement. Art history and theory and criticism courses completed as an undergraduate count toward fulfilling the department’s combined 40-unit art history requirement but do not count toward the 72 units required for the degree. Students with few or no art history or theory or criticism courses in undergraduate study may take art history or theory or criticism upper division or graduate courses at UCLA as electives to be counted toward the 40-unit art history requirement and toward the total units required for the degree. Subjects related to the special interests of the student may be substituted by petition.
A total of 12 units of Art 596 may be applied toward the 72 units required for the degree; four units may be applied toward the graduate course requirement.

Comprehensive Examination Plan
In addition to the completion of the required coursework, each degree is awarded on the basis of the quality of the student’s work as demonstrated in the exhibition which is part of the comprehensive examination. The document becomes the property of and is retained by the University.

A student may be placed on departmental probation by a majority of the faculty or by their M.F.A. committee after a bi-annual graduate review if there is concern about the student’s ability to progress toward completion of the M.F.A. degree. Within two weeks of the review, the student will be informed of this action in writing by the faculty area head or the M.F.A. committee chair and advised to submit more work for review by faculty at the end of the quarter following the quarter in which the reviewed occurred, or at the end of summer for those students informed of their probationary status following a review in the Spring Quarter. At this subsequent review, the faculty will re-evaluate the student’s work and progress with regard to the student’s continuing status, and within two weeks of the review, by majority vote of the faculty, a recommendation for termination may be made. The student will be notified of this recommendation in writing.

All Ph.D. qualifying examinations are intended to determine competency in the overall field. While the courses offered are intended to prepare students for the field examinations, and while the professors of the courses are normally also the examiners, the qualifying examination is not restricted solely to the material explicitly presented in course lectures or assigned exercises. Students are assisted in acquiring knowledge of the overall field by course reading lists that include recommended supplementary and complementary readings.

Examinations are graded H (Ph.D. honors pass), P (Ph.D. pass), M (M.A. pass), and F (fail).
Students must pass (with a P or better) the qualifying examinations in all three of the standard first-year core sequences — microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and quantitative methods — by the beginning of the Fall Quarter of their second year. Students are required to take these examinations at the first available sitting (June of the first year). If students are unsuccessful on their first try, they may repeat one or all of the qualifying examinations at the next available sitting (September at the beginning of the student’s second year). Students who have successfully completed their first-year core requirements must regularly attend either a departmental workshop or a dissertation pro-seminar each quarter of their second year.
Students must pass (with a P or better) qualifying examinations in three doctoral elective fields (or two fields plus breadth option), usually by the end of the second year, but no later than June of the student’s third year. Written qualifying examinations may be repeated, but students may sit for no more than nine times in total for all (core and field) examinations combined. Students who have successfully completed all course requirements and written qualifying examinations must enroll in and regularly attend a departmental workshop and a dissertation pro-seminar for each of their remaining quarters in the doctoral program.
Qualifying examinations in all core sequences are offered twice a year (September and June). Doctoral field qualifying examinations are offered at least once a year.
By employing the breadth option, students may substitute a field by coursework, defined as three graduate-level courses for one of the three elective fields. Courses used to satisfy this requirement cannot include any courses used in the core sequence requirements nor can they include courses preparatory for the written qualifying examinations which the student is using for field requirements. The breadth option must include Economics 207 or 241 or 242. Students may apply courses at the graduate level (200-level) outside the Economics Department on written preapproval by the vice chair for graduate affairs. Only courses in which a minimum grade of B is earned may be used to satisfy this requirement.
Paper Requirement
A written paper must be completed by the end of the student’s third year. This paper is to be read and evaluated by a member of the department faculty, who must certify in writing that it satisfied this requirement. This paper could be based on or be an extension of an optional or required paper for a course. Alternatively, the paper could be one presented in a workshop or an outgrowth of a research assistantship or independent study. Ideally, the paper would be related to the student’s doctoral dissertation. The materials of this paper may be used as the basis for presentation in a departmental workshop, as well as the basis for the dissertation.
Before advancing to the University Oral Qualifying Examination, students are expected to present a paper in a departmental pro-seminar. It is recommended that this be completed by June of the second year.
Oral Qualifying Examination
The University Oral Qualifying Examination, administered by the student’s doctoral committee, is scheduled after successful completion of all first-year core examinations as prescribed, completion of the economic history or history of thought requirement, receipt of a pass at the Ph.D. level for at least one qualifying examination in the student’s field, and the submission of a written dissertation proposal. The proposal should be made available to the committee members at least two weeks prior to the date of the examination. The examination focuses on, but is not be limited to, the dissertation proposal.
A student should attempt the oral examination no later than the end of August before the beginning of the third year of study. Students must have been registered in the immediately preceding spring term in order to take the examination in the summer. In case of failure, a student may repeat the oral qualifying examination once.
A student’s doctoral committee will meet with the student at the end of the third year to determine if the student’s progress in the dissertation research is satisfactory. At this meeting, the student will submit a written progress report on the proposed topic that describes the work completed to date and includes a detailed outline of the plan for completing the project. With the consent of the student’s committee, completed papers may be submitted as part of, or in lieu of, the written progress report.
Advancement to Candidacy
Students are advanced to candidacy and awarded the Candidate in Philosophy (C.Phil.) degree upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations.
Doctoral Dissertation
Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.
Final Oral Examination (Defense of the Dissertation)
Not required for all students in the program. The decision as to whether a defense is required is made by the doctoral committee.
Time-to-Degree
The department has established a five-year normative time-to-degree plan which is divided into a two-year pre-candidacy period and a three-year candidacy period. This projection is suggestive, and it should be recognized that the amount of time necessary to complete the degree has been found to vary widely among students, due to differences in previous training and other factors. All requirements for the Ph.D. degree must, however, be completed within seven calendar years after entering the program.

A student who is not making satisfactory progress toward the degree is notified to meet with the vice chair, who determines whether to recommend termination to the Graduate Committee. Termination is normally recommended in cases where a student: (1) has failed to maintain a 3.00 grade point average; (2) has failed to pass the written qualifying examinations in the first year core fields by the end of the second sitting; (3) has failed to pass all written qualifying examinations in nine sittings (or by the end of the third year); (4) has failed to be advanced to candidacy by the end of the third year; or (5) has failed to complete all requirements for the degree by the end of the seventh year.
The student is informed of the vice chair’s recommendation and has an opportunity to provide written materials in support of continued enrollment in the Ph.D. program. The Graduate Committee thoroughly reviews the student’s record as well as the supplementary materials provided by the student and makes a final recommendation to the Graduate Division.

Interdepartmental Program
College of Letters and Science
The African Studies Program offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in African Studies.
Advising
The M.A. program in African Studies is supervised by an interdepartmental faculty committee. The chair of this committee and of the program is also the graduate adviser. There is also a staff assistant to the graduate adviser. Students should remain in continuous contact with the graduate adviser and the staff regarding their program and academic progress. Students also have an informal faculty adviser in their area of concentration.
Areas of Study
Most concentrations are in the social sciences, arts, humanities, public health, or urban and regional planning. Sociology and anthropology may be taken as a combined specialization or area of study, as may interdisciplinary courses in development studies.
Foreign Language Requirement
Students are required to satisfy the language requirement by achieving elementary proficiency in an African language in one of the following two ways: (1) taking three courses (12 units) in an African language with an average grade of B or better (these courses may not be applied toward the nine-course minimum required for the degree); or (2) achieving an elementary rating on an oral proficiency examination arranged by the African languages coordinator. European languages spoken in Africa may be substituted by petition to the chair.
Course Requirements
A minimum of nine courses (36 units) is required for the M.A. degree, at least five of which must be at the graduate level. The courses must be distributed between disciplines as follows:
(1) African Studies 201A
(2) Major discipline: a minimum of five courses, of which three must be at the graduate level. Sociology and anthropology may be taken as a combined specialization or area of study. Other combined specializations must be approved by the graduate adviser.
(2) A minimum of three other courses outside the major area, of which two must be at the graduate level. Students who are enrolled in the concurrent degree program with Public Health may use up to two Community Health Sciences courses (eight units) toward these three elective courses.
Except for 500-series courses, University regulations indicate that a student in an interdepartmental degree program may not apply courses taken on an S/U grading basis toward the master’s degree. By petition, the program will consider an exception for one of the nine required courses. Such petitions must be approved by a graduate adviser and the Graduate Division. One course in the 500 series may be applied toward the total course requirement and toward the minimum graduate course requirement. With consent of the graduate adviser, other 500-series courses may be allowed but may not be applied toward the minimum course requirements.

Comprehensive Examination Plan
The comprehensive examination plan involves a four- to six-hour written examination that is taken in the last quarter of academic residence. The examination is set by a three-person faculty committee, two members of which must be from the major discipline or field of concentration. In consultation with the graduate adviser, the student selects the committee members for the examination. The chair of the committee receives questions from other members and is responsible for setting the examination questions and requirements. An additional oral examination may be held at the discretion of the examining committee. If the comprehensive examination is failed, it may be retaken only once. A student must take the exam within the next academic quarter.
Thesis Plan
Every master’s degree thesis plan requires the completion of an approved thesis that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research.
The thesis option is available by permission of the graduate adviser. Upon obtaining permission, the student, in consultation with the graduate adviser, selects a faculty committee to supervise and assess the thesis. Two of the three faculty committee members, including the chair, must be from the area of concentration; a third member must be from another discipline. The thesis must reflect the major discipline or field of concentration. An oral defense may be required in some circumstances.
Time-to-Degree
Normal progress from graduate admission to award of the master’s degree is six quarters. Normal progress for students enrolled in the concurrent degree program with Public Health is nine quarters.
