Collaboration, innovation, efficiency, and fairness: these qualities, combined with the power of ideas and inquiry, define the UCLA Division of Graduate Education. We provide resources and essential services to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, departments and faculty, fostering their success. Through our technology and expertise, we support and advance admissions, outreach, funding, and institutional research. We are faithful to the policies of the Graduate Council and Academic Senate, administering them with objectivity, flexibility and care. We elevate scholarship and the UCLA experience by championing diversity. The Division of Graduate Education supports the students and scholars who make transformative discoveries that impact the world.
The Dean of the Division of Graduate Education, along with two Associate Deans, constitute the faculty leadership. The Dean reports administratively to the Executive Vice Chancellor and works closely with the Graduate Council as an ex officio member. The primary responsibilities of the Associate Deans are to assist the Dean in providing academic leadership for program development, planning, and decision-making across all functions and activities of the Division.
The Division exemplifies, in its working relationship with the Academic Senate’s Graduate Council, the principles of shared governance that are a hallmark of the University of California. While the Graduate Council legislates policy and conducts reviews of academic programs, the Division of Graduate Education is the administrative unit that implements and monitors these policies. The Division and the Council work in concert to ensure that the academic programs maintain standards of excellence, that policies are fairly and equitably administered, and that the administration of graduate education serves to facilitate student and faculty goals.
The Division of Graduate Education is composed of six units: Academic Services; Budget & Personnel; Diversity, Inclusion & Admissions; Fellowships & Financial Services; Information Technology & Institutional Research; and, Operations & External Relations.
