In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants are expected to submit the following:

Portfolio: Each applicant must submit a portfolio that demonstrates an understanding of the characteristics of materials and dexterity in their handling, fabrication and preservation. Because of their common application in the conservation field, the portfolio should include samples of treatment reports, representational drawings, photography, and/or scientific illustration. Samples should demonstrate the use of drawing and photography for documentation purposes, particularly those produced during the applicant's experience in a conservation laboratory, fieldwork or exhibit preparation. Samples of other stdio arts and crafts such as painting, ceramics, sculpture, weaving, papermaking, woodworking, basketry, etc., may also be included. The portfolio should be submitted elecronically in a single PDF file (not to exceed 30 MB). The portfolio should include only those examples that best represent the applicant's skill. The portfolio will be evaluated on the applicant's familiarity with materials and their handling, technical aptitude, and clarity of presentation.

Statement of Purpose.

Writing sample (3500 words maximum) or a peer-reviewed published article of which the applicant is the first author.

Prerequisites:

A minimum of 200 hours of documented practical experience in conservation, such as fieldwork, laboratory experience, exhibit preparation, or similar responsibilities performed under the supervision of a professional conservator (at least one letter of recommendation must be written by a conservation supervisor).

Applicants must have studied a modern foreign language for the equivalent of one academic year prior to entering the program. A UCLA Foreign Language Department Placement Test is given in the first quarter of study to each new student.

Applicants must have completed study equivalent to one academic year in archaeology, anthropology or ethnography. This requirement may be fulfilled by a full year in one subject or via coursework in two or all three of these subjects.

Applicants must also have completed one academic year of study in each of the following subjects: art history, general chemistry (with laboratory) and organic chemistry (with laboratory).

Coursework in other fields of science (physical chemistry, biology, geology, physics, materials science, etc) may be considered favorably but is not essential for admissions consideration.

Those applicants who reach the final stages of evaluation will be interviewed in person as part of the evaluation process.
