UCLA-Wide Graduate Admissions Requirements

Degree-Specific Admissions Requirements

In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants for the articulated degree program must be enrolled as medical students in good standing with the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Applicants are expected to present a supplemental application showing high academic achievement, considerable interest in a career as a clinical investigator, and commitment by a research mentor.

Articulated degree admissions requirements:

Medicine, M.D./Clinical Research, M.S.

The articulated MD/MS degree program in the David Geffen School of Medicine requires that students are enrolled full time as a medical student in the School of Medicine, have tuition support for the duration of the program, and submit the following application materials to Doug Smoot in David Geffen School of Medicine CTSI Student Affairs between December 1 - May 15 in their second year:

  • Personal statement
  • Official transcripts (undergraduate and medical school)
  • 2-3 page description of research project (If no research interest in mind, please describe areas of interest.)
  • Research mentor's NIH Biosketch or CV (If no dedicated mentor, further guidance can be provided by program director.)
  • Three letters of recommendation

Applicants are required to satisfy the admission requirements of both programs, and students must meet all requirements of both programs to be awarded the articulated MD/MS degree. In the event a medical student opts not to complete the MSCR portion of the articulated degree, the student would still be able to earn the MD degree by completing all the requirements for the Doctor of Medicine degree. Applicants interested in this articulated program should contact the School of Medicine CTSI Student Affairs. Additional time to apply to the articulated MD/MS degree program can be given on a case-by-case basis.
