In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants are expected to submit a research paper or other writing sample demonstrating strong writing and analytical skills, and a statement of purpose. M.A.: Applicants are normally expected to have completed the equivalent of one course in early Islamic history and three courses in Islamic cultures and institutions. Applicants are expected to demonstrate intermediate level proficiency in one of the major languages of countries with Muslim majorities or very large Muslim minorities, including Arabic, Berber, Hausa, Indonesian, Iranian languages, Malay, Swahili, Turkic languages, Urdu, Wolof, and Yoruba. Applicants who have any deficiencies in these prerequisites will be considered for admission on a provisional basis for one to three quarters. If admitted on a provisional basis, these students must satisfy the prerequisite requirements by taking the appropriate courses. Courses taken to satisfy prerequisite requirements may not be applied toward a graduate degree in the program. Ph.D.: A master's degree from a program with requirements equivalent to those of the M.A. at UCLA is required. Advanced-level proficiency in Arabic is also required for admission to the Ph.D. program.
