In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants are expected to submit a writing sample, normally consisting of a recent term paper (preferably on a linguistic topic) and a statement of purpose Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with a major in an Indo-European language field (for example, German, Slavic, Celtic, Romance languages, Latin, Greek), linguistics (with concentration in historical and comparative linguistics), or anthropology (especially linguistic anthropology). In addition, all applicants must provide evidence of basic competence in Classical Latin (normally equivalent to one year of college-level Latin). Applicants who do not have a bachelor's degree in Classics or Latin should, in the personal statement or resume, fully explain the basis for their Latin competence (regular coursework, summer school, etc.). Should deficiencies exist in prerequisites to specific work at the graduate level, applicants may be granted provisional admission and directed to remove those deficiencies in the initial period of enrollment. |
