In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants are expected to submit a statement of purpose and a writing sample. The writing sample may be in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field other than Spanish, but who have substantial coursework and/or preparation in the field may also be considered for admission. One or more complementary courses may be recommended if the admissions committee determines that some area of preparation needs to be strengthened. Applicants holding master's degrees in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics who wish to pursue the Ph.D. with specialization in Spanish, Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian literature must take the master's comprehensive examination in literature. Applicants holding master's degrees in Spanish, Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian literature who wish to pursue the Ph.D. in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics must take the master's comprehensive examination in linguistics. The M.A. in Spanish or Portuguese is awarded as a milestone toward the Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures. Students must have the recommendation of the department to proceed toward the Ph.D. degree; they are notified of their eligibility to continue when they receive the M.A. degree. The program only admits applicants whose objective is the Ph.D. |
