Degree-Specific Admissions Requirements

In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants are expected to submit a statement of purpose (as specific as possible about the applicant's interests in art history in approximately 400 words).

A writing sample is also required in the form of an M.A. thesis or, if no thesis was written, two 10-15 page research papers or one longer research paper (limit: 30 pages).

Applicants must also submit a curriculum vitae and a completed language survey (available as a download from the Art History website).

Application materials cannot be returned or forwarded.

The Department welcomes applications from candidates with a B.A. degree in art history or other related disciplines with demonstrated intellectual investment in the advanced study of art and its histories. We also welcome applicants from those with an M.A. degree from UCLA or other institutions. An M.A. in Art History from another institution may be accepted as equivalent to that from UCLA or the holder may be accepted into the program at a stage determined by the graduate review committee.

Academic preparation and professional accomplishments should reflect capacity and/or potential for original academic research as well as strong interpretive and writing skills. Applicants must show evidence of having taken and passed with a grade of B or better at least three courses (upper division and/or graduate) in the history of art or allied fields.
