CIRTL: Next Steps: Leveraging Your TAR Project for Future Funding Opportunities @ Online Drop-in event

Completing a Teaching-as-Research (TAR) project demonstrates a commitment to both learning and education in your scholarship; this commitment can make you a stronger candidate for many grant and fellowship opportunities during and after graduate school. This one-hour, drop-in event will provide participants with:

1. An introduction to how TAR projects can align with the goals of extramural funding organizations (e.g., National Science Foundation, Ford Foundation, American Association of University Women) that financially support graduate students at various stages of the degree process (applicants early in program, at least 2 years remaining, preparing for a postdoc position, or open to any degree stage).

2. Tips on how to assess the goals of a funding organization to identify areas of mutual interest and adapt how a proposal is written for different audiences

3. Resources and strategies for finding additional large-scope (1 year/multiple thousands of dollars) or small-scope (single-event/several hundred dollars) funding opportunities through online databases and campus organizations.

This drop-in event is open to the public and will take place online on Wednesday, July 18 at 1:30-2:30PM ET / 12:30-1:30PM CT / 11:30AM-12:30PM MT / 10:30-11:30AM PT. Please note that this event will be recorded and may be shared on CIRTL’s public YouTube channel.

CIRTL: Evidence-Based Introduction to Teaching (University of Colorado Boulder)

What: Calling all STEM post-docs and new faculty! Teaching for the first time? Interested in improving your teaching? Join us at EBIT, a five-day, four-hour per day summer institute for post-docs and new faculty that uses the engineering principles of “Design, Build, Test, and Iterate” to develop course content and assessments. Take part in a genuine student-centered learning experience that will help you in your job search or help start your job off right! Topics addressed in this institute include: Educational research techniques, learning objectives, targeted assessments, active teaching strategies, and Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) Core Ideas. CIRTL: Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching (Online) @ Online

What: For the first time ever, the CIRTL Network is running an online Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching designed specifically for grad students and postdocs new to teaching. In this five-day institute, participants will experience a thorough introduction to the core ideas that ground CIRTL’s approach to STEM education: learning-through-diversity, learning communities, evidence-based teaching, and teaching-as-research. By examining relevant literature, working online in small peer groups facilitated by topical experts, and performing structured work independently; participants will develop a deep understanding of scientific teaching. CIRTL’s Summer Teaching Institute (University of British Columbia)
Jul 23 – Jul 27 all-day

What: This institute consists of teaching practice, theory application, and topical sessions specifically relevant to STEM Graduate Students and scholars new to teaching. During the institute participants will teach three short lessons and receive feedback from their peers. In this supportive atmosphere participants will have a chance to begin to develop new teaching skills, to enhance existing skills, and/or to try new and challenging ideas. By the end of the institute, participants will be able to design and teach effective STEM undergraduate lessons using evidence-based teaching concepts with emphasis on alignment of learning objectives, activities and assessment.

What: The Drexel CIRTL Summer Institute on Qualitative Assessment Practices offers a three-day institute to STEM graduate and post-docs to advance their knowledge of principles and techniques in assessment. The institute includes tools, resources, and sessions on effective assessment techniques that will help improve teaching and STEM research effectiveness. Participants will benefit from working together in a community of fellow future faculty preparing for STEM education research and effective teaching.

2018 Autumn Postdoctoral Recruitment Event at Ohio State University

The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Office of Postdoctoral Research is pleased to announce the 2018 Autumn Postdoctoral Recruitment Event! This event will be held October 22-24, in collaboration with the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Pelotonia Fellowship Program.

 

This event will provide an excellent opportunity for outstanding PhD students from leading graduate programs to meet our research faculty, interview for open postdoctoral positions, and discover the exciting and innovative research taking place at The Ohio State University and the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Selected candidates will be invited to visit the Ohio State campus, network with current OSU and NCH postdocs, present their research to faculty in a podium presentation, interview with prospective mentors, and learn more about postdoctoral opportunities at Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Candidates selected to attend this event may be considered for a variety of opportunities at Ohio State, including fellowships, training grants, and other internal training programs. Full funding will be provided for travel expenses.

 

Application for this event is open to senior graduate students who have completed or expect to complete their PhD between January 2018 and June 2019. Preference will be given to US Citizens and permanent residents who are training grant-eligible AND who come from underrepresented backgrounds including African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, or persons with a disability.
