Getting Ready to Teach in the American Classroom: Building Rapport and Effective Communication Skills @ Online

Develop and practice your own strategies for effective communication in this case-study-based workshop focused on building and maintaining rapport with students. The workshop will include a facilitated case study discussion (see “Workload” below). In that discussion, participants will investigate sources of mis-communication between students and instructors, and discuss tangible strategies to increase effective communication (verbal and non-verbal) with others in and out of the classroom. Participants will: • Propose strategies to build rapport with undergraduate students • Generate a list of compensation strategies that will increase the effectiveness of their communications with students. Workshop Schedule This workshop has one online session, at 2-3:30PM ET / 1-2:30PM CT / 12-1:30PM MT / 11AM-12:30PM PT on Wednesday, February 7. Workload Participants will be expected to read the following case study before the workshop begins: Rybarczyk, BJ. Clear Communication: Compensation Strategies for When Student Just Don’t Understand. National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science, Buffalo, NY. (enrolled participants will be given access to this case study). Registration & Enrollment This workshop is limited to 25 participants. Registration runs from January 2 through Friday, February 2 at 12PM CT. STEM/SBE grad students and postdocs from CIRTL institutions receive priority; we refer to the institution, role, and discipline in your website profile when assessing priority.

Latinos in the Mathematical Sciences Conference 2018 @ UCLA Campus

On March 8-10, 2018, IPAM will host a conference showcasing the achievements of Latina/os in the mathematical sciences. The goal of the conference is to encourage Latina/os to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, to promote the advancement of Latina/os currently in the discipline, to showcase research being conducted by Latina/os at the forefront of their fields, and, finally, to build a community around shared academic interests. The conference will be held on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, CA.

More information and an application for travel support will be available in 2017.
